The sales index of the services in the Basque Country rose by 0.1% in the first quarter of 2015

Services sector sales rose by 1.2% in constant terms once the price effect had been eliminated

The service sector index of the Basque Country showed a 0.1% nominal rise in sales in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, the sales index was down a nominal 1.1%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, the trade sales index was down 0.6% in nominal terms in the first quarter of 2015, whilst for other services, which form part of the index, it was up 1.3% with regards to the same period of 2014.

Within trade the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector stood out for positive reasons, registering a nominal upturn of 11.8%. Retail Trade registered a fall of 0.9% and Wholesale Trade dropped by 2.1%.

The sectors of other services posted different performances. In the Information & Communications sector there was an upturn of 5.4%, Transport & Storage rose by 4.0%, and in Administrative Activities & Services there was an increase of 2.8%; Hotel Management & Catering saw a fall of 2.8%, and Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities registered a downturn of 2.9% with respect to the first quarter of 2014.

By province, Álava posted a rise of 1.3%, Bizkaia saw no significant variation (0.0%) and Gipuzkoa saw a decrease of 0.3%.

In real terms, services sector sales rose by 1.2% in the first quarter of 2015 once the price effect had been eliminated

Within Trade, the sales index was up by 1.4% and in other services there was an increase of 0.7%, with regards to the same quarter of 2014 and in constant terms.

The year-on-year evolutions within Trade were positive for all sectors: the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles was up by 14.1%, the Retail Trade sales index rose by 1.1% and the Wholesale Trade sales index rose by 0.2%.

In the section Other Services, in constant terms, the sales index for Information & Communications rose by 6.8%, in the Transport & Storage sector it increased by 2.8%, and in the Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services sector it rose by 1.2%. On the other hand, Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities fell by 3.4% and Hotel Management & Catering was down by 3.1%.

The index of employed people in the overall services sector in the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2015 was up by 1.0% on the fourth quarter of 2014, and by 1.2% in year-on-year terms.
