The turnover figure for Basque industry fell by 2.2% in 2013

Sales abroad represented 36.2% of total sales of the Basque manufacturing industry

The net turnover figure for the industrial sector of the Basque country reached 54,443 million euros in 2013, which was a nominal decrease of 2.2%, according to data prepared by EUSTAT.

The manufacturing industry, which excludes the Extractive Industries, Water Supply & Sanitation and Electricity, Gas & Steam sectors, had a turnover of 46,912.9 million euros in 2013, with a 2% drop compared to 2012.

Regarding destination, the Basque industry directed 36,2% of its sales abroad, 3.8 percentage points more than at the beginning of the crisis, in 2008. Out of the total sales, 22% was to the European Union while 14.5% was to the Rest of the World. For their part, sales to the Rest of Spain amounted to 26.3% of the total.

The number of people employed throughout Basque industry reached 195,633 employees in 2013, which was a 3.7% drop with respect to the previous year, and meant the loss of 7,541 jobs. Personnel Expenditure also fell by 2.1%. Investment registered an increase of 34.7%.

By sector, the branches with the heaviest weight in the total turnover figure for the industrial sector in 2013 were Metallurgy & Metal Products (25.2%), Coke Plants & Oil Refining (12.5%), Electricity, Gas & Steam (11.7%) and Transport Material (10%). On the other hand, the branches of Metallurgy & Metal Products, Machinery & Equipment and Plastics & Rubber were those that employed the highest number of individuals in 2013, with 33.7%, 10.4% and 9.5% of the total, respectively.

Regarding sector trends, five branches showed increased sales: Food, Beverages & Tobacco (15.4%), Pharmaceutical Products and Extraction Industries, both with an increase of 10.5%; Electronic & Computer Products (1.8%) and Coke Plants & Oil Refining (0.4%). On the other hand, the branches with the sharpest declines were: Furniture & Other Manufacturing (-10.8%), Electrical Material & Equipment (-9.3%), Plastic & Rubber (-6.2%) and Transport Material (-5.3%).

The loss of employment was more or less general across all sectors, especially affecting Electrical Material & Equipment (-9.7%), Plastic & Rubber (-7.2%), Furniture & Other Manufacturing (-6.8%) and Textile, Garments, Leather & Footwear (-6.4%). Only the Transport Material sector (4.7%) registered a positive variation.

By province, Gipuzkoa saw a fall of 4.8% in turnover, whilst in Álava the fall was 3%. On the other hand, Bizkaia showed no variation (0.0%) in its turnover with respect to 2012. Employment showed a downward trend in the three provinces: by 5% in Bizkaia, 3.2% in Gipuzkoa and 2.2% in Álava.
