The regions of Gipuzkoa stand out for the percentage of innovating companies with 10 or more employees
Alto Deba is the region with the highest percentage, 46.8%, and Rioja Alavesa the lowest, 28.2%
The percentage of companies with 10 or more employees with innovation in 2013 was 37.6% in the Basque Country as a whole, with a notably larger presence in the regions of Gipuzkoa, according to data provided by Eustat.
Specifically, in five of the seven regions of Gipuzkoa, over 40% of companies with 10 or more employees were innovative in 2013: Alto Deba, 46.8%; Goierri, 43.6%; Tolosa, 42.3%; Donostialdea, 40.8%; and Bajo Deba, 40.2%. In Álava the region Cantábrica Alavesa stood out with 39.3% of its companies of that size being innovative. Finally, in Bizkaia, the region of Duranguesado registered the highest percentage, with 40.3% of its companies innovating, followed by regions with less than 40%: Encartaciones, 38.9%, and Plentzia-Mungia, 38.1%.
As regards the regions with the lowest percentage of innovating companies, attention should be drawn to Rioja Alavesa (28.2%) in Álava, Arratia-Nervión (34.9%) in Bizkaia and el Bajo Bidasoa (35.5%) in Gipuzkoa.
As regards the Basque capitals, Donostia/San Sebastián took the lead with 42.6% of innovating companies; the percentage in Vitoria-Gasteiz was more than seven percentage points lower at 35.4%; and finally Bilbao, which had 34.5% of innovating companies with 10 or more employees in 2013.
