The sales index of the services in the Basque Country rose by 2.1% in the third quarter of 2014

Trade was up by 1.9% and other services rose by 2.3%

The service sector index of the Basque Country showed a 2.1% nominal rise in sales in the third quarter of 2014 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, the sales index was up a nominal 0.8%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, the trade sales index was up 1.9% in nominal terms, whilst for other services, which form part of the index, it was up 2.3% with regards to the same period of 2013.

Within trade, the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector stood out for positive reasons, registering a nominal upturn of 3.8%, as did Wholesale Trade, which registered a 2.5% growth, whilst the rise was more moderate in Retail Trade, at 0.6%.

In sectors related to other services there were upturns in Transport & Storage, which increased by 9.8%, in Hotel Management & Catering, which was up by 1.4%, and in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services, which rose by 0.7%. The drops occurred in the Scientific & Technical Professional Activities sector, with a drop of 5.4%, and in Information & Communications, with a decrease of 0.8%.

By province, in Gipuzkoa there was an upturn of 2.8% and in Bizkaia a 2.2% growth was produced; Álava recorded a slight increase of 0.1%.

In real terms, services sector sales rose by 2.3% in the third quarter once the price effect had been eliminated

Within Trade, the sales index was up by 2.8% and in other services there was an increase of 1.5%, with regards to the same quarter of 2013 and in constant terms.

The year-on-year evolutions within Trade were positive for all sectors: the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles was up by 3.8%, the Wholesale Trade Index rose by 3.4% and the Retail Trade Index fell by 1.6%, all in real terms.

In the Other Services section, in constant euros, the sales index of the Transport & Storage sector was up by 7.8%, Information & Communications by 1.6%, Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services by 0.8% and Hotel Management & Catering by 0.5%, while the Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities sector fell by 5.9%.

The index of employed people in the overall services sector in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2014 was down by 0.6% on the second quarter of 2014.
