Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 0.2% in April 2014

With regards to the previous month they were up 3.1%

Sales registered in large stores in the Basque Country in April 2014 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 0.2% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products at large stores reflected a nominal year-on-year fall of 6.7%, whilst sales corresponding to other items were up by 4.5%.

There were year-on-year decreases in sales in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they fell by 0.5%, in Álava by 0.4% and in Bizkaia by 0.1%.

With respect to the previous month, March 2014, sales for the Basque Country as a whole rose by 3.1% in nominal terms. Sales of food products remained unchanged (0.0%), whilst other products registered an increase of 5.0%, in deseasonalised terms.

By province and in relation to March 2014, there was a rise in total sales in the three provinces: in Álava they rose by 5.2%, in Gipuzkoa by 3.1%, and in Bizkaia they were up by 2.5%.

In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 0.3% year-on-year decrease and a 3.3% upturn in comparison to the previous month

Compared to April 2013, sales of food products fell by 6.6%, whilst those of other products were up by 4.3% in constant euros.

There were decreases in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa, sales with respect to the same month of the previous year decreased by 0.5%, and in both Álava and Gipuzkoa they fell by 0.2%, in constant terms.

Compared to the previous month and once the price effect had been discounted, food product sales fell by 0.2% compared to March 2014, and those of other products rose by 5.4%.

By province, Álava registered an increase of 5.9% in total sales with respect to the month of March, Gipuzkoa rose by 3.0%, and Bizkaia by 2.7%, all in real terms.

The number of individuals employed in large stores rose by 0.5% in April 2014 compared to March 2014, in deseasonalised terms.
