The sales index of the services sector of the Basque Country dropped by 5.7% in the third quarter of 2013
Trade was down by 4.4% and other services fell by 7.1%
The nominal sales index of the services sector in the Basque Country fell by 5.7% in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data provided by Eustat.
With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index was up a nominal 0.1%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sectors, the trade sales index was down 4.4% in nominal terms in the third quarter of 2013, whilst for other services, which form part of the index, it was down 7.1% with regards to the same quarter of 2012.
Within trade, the wholesale trade sector registered a nominal decrease of 4.6%, whilst the fall in Retail trade posted a downturn of 5.9%. For its part, Sales and repair of motor vehicles fell by 2.2% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year.
In all sectors related to Other services there were downturns of varying degrees. The biggest were recorded in the Information & Communications sector, with a drop of 12.8%; in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services, which obtained a negative result of 10.1%, and in Hotel Management & Catering, which fell 9.0%. The fall in sales related to Scientific & Technical Professional Activities was 7.3%, and in Transport & Storage it was 1.3%.
By province, the three provinces experienced downturns in their sales indices: Bizkaia fell by 7.1%, Álava by 6.7% and Gipuzkoa by 2.9%.
In real terms, services sector sales fell by 7.1% in the third quarter once the price effect had been eliminated
In Trade, the sales index was down by 5.9% and in Other Services the decrease was 8.9%, with regards to the same quarter of 2012, at constant prices.
The year-on-year evolutions within Trade were negative for all sectors: the Wholesale Trade index dropped 5.1%, while Retail Trade was down 8.5% and Sales and repair of motor vehicles fell 0.4%.
In the Other Services sector, in constant euros, the sales index for Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services dropped by 12.7%, that for Information & Communications by 11.4% and Hotel Management & Catering, by 10.7%. Furthermore, the sales index for Scientific & Technical Professional Activities was down by 10.1% and Transport & Storage, by 3.3%.
The index of employed people in the services sector in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2013 was down by 1.1% on the previous quarter.
