Expenditure on Scientific Research and Technological Development activities (R&D) fell by 0.8% in the Basque Country in 2012, according to provisional data provided by EUSTAT. However, the total number of R&D personnel in equivalent-to-full-time positions rose by 3.6%.
These expenditure and R&D personnel figures are based on the uneven performance of their implementation sectors.
The main sector, business, was down by 1.7% in internal expenditure, although there was a 0.7% rise in personnel for R&D activities.
Expenditure on Higher Education fell by 0.1% while R&D personnel rose by 9.3%
Lastly, in the Public Administration sector, both expenditure and the number of personnel dedicated to R&D was up, by 5.7% and 13.4% respectively.
Methodological note: Eustat has produced Advanced Data on the evolution of expenditure and R&D personnel in 2012. In order to do this, universities and bodies that together represent nearly 80% of the total expenditure obtained the previous year have been taken into account, allowing an advance of the results that will be presented in a definitive form in November of this year to be brought forward to June.
