Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 7.8% in January 2013
Compared to December, the industrial production index of the Basque Country rose by 0.3%
Industrial production of the Basque Country in January 2013 fell by 7.8% compared to the same month of 2012, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, December 2012, the industrial production of the Basque Country rose by 0.3%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
By sector, and using the classification of the major industrial sectors, there were noticeable differences between the evolution of the index for January 2013 and that for January 2012. Equipment Goods were down by 14.2%, Intermediate Goods fell by 7.2% and Consumer Goods as a whole experienced a decrease of 9.0%, due to the downturn in both Consumer Durables, which dropped by 13.7%, and Consumer Non-Durables, which fell by 7.8%. Energy rose by 9.3%.
The month-on-month variation in January 2013, compared to December 2012, also registered distinct changes for the main industrial groups. Equipment Goods rose by 2.9% and Intermediate Goods registered an increase of 1.2%, whereas Energy dropped by 4.6%. Consumer Goods as a whole fell by 1.1%, with Consumer Durables dropping by 3.8% and Consumer Non-Durables down by 0.4%.
All relevant sectors posted decreases in the month of January 2013 with regards to the same month of the previous year. The smallest decreases were in Food, Beverages & Tobacco and Electricity, Gas & Steam with rates of -1.2% and -3.4%, respectively.
On the other hand, the largest decreases were produced in theElectrical Material & Equipment sector, which posted a year-on-year drop of 15.0%, the Transport Material sector, which fell by 14.1%, and the Machinery & Equipment sector, which registered a fall of 13.8%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of January was negative in the three provinces. It fell by 10.9% in Álava, 8.9% in Gipuzkoa and 4.9% in Bizkaia. The month-on-month variation rate was negative in Bizkaia, where it dropped by 1.0%, whilst in Gipuzkoa it increased by 0.7% and in Álava it was up by 2.0% with regards to December 2012.
