Deaths fell by 4.6% in the third quarter of 2012 in the Basque Country
20% of people who died were over the age of 90, with 3 out of 4 being women
In the third quarter of 2012 the figure for deaths in the Basque Country stood at 4,213, which was a drop of 4.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data. As far as the sex of the people who died was concerned, 2,066 (49%) were women and 2,147 (51%) were men. By province, in Álava there were 503 deaths, in Bizkaia there were 2,307 and in Gipuzkoa 1,403 people died.
If we consider the age at the time of death, 22% of the people who died were under 70 years of age, 20% were between 70 and 80 and 38% between 80 and 90 years of age. The remaining 20% was accounted for by the deaths of 841 people over 90 years of age, amongst whom 3 out of every 4 were women.
The main cause of death was due to tumours: 1,470 people died for this reason (34.9%). Following this, as the second cause of death, were diseases of the circulatory system, which accounted for 1,106 deaths (26.3%). The third main cause of death was respiratory disease, which caused 318 mortalities over the last few months (7.5%).
The cause of death continued to vary according to sex: amongst men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst amongst women, the main cause of death was cardiovascular disease, followed by tumours in second place. Diseases of the respiratory system remained the third cause of death for both sexes.
Amongst the deaths that occurred in the third quarter of 2012, 22 corresponded to children under the age of one, 11 boys and 11 girls.
The rate of natural increase in the third quarter of 2012 was positive, with a rise in the population of 958 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: Bizkaia increased its population by 345 inhabitants, Álava by 308 and Gipuzkoa by 305.
