RETAIL TRADE INDEX (ICIm) 3rd quarter 2012
Sales, not including service stations, were down by 0.7%
The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 1.1% drop in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2012 with regards to the same period of the previous year, according to data provided by Eustat.
Sales in the sector, not including service stations, were down by 0.7% in year-on-year terms.
With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index was up a nominal 3.1%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sectors, food products registered an increase of 0.7% in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2012, retail trade of other products saw a fall of 1.9% and sales of automotive fuel were down 2.2%, all with regards to same period in 2011.
In the retail food sector, specialised trade was up by 4.1%, as non-specialised trade in mainly food products fell by 0.6%. In retail trade of other products there was a rise in specialised trade of other consumer goods (2.3%) and decreases of varying intensity in the rest of the sectors taken into consideration. The sector specialising in personal equipment fell by 6.3%, household equipment was down by 0.5% and non-specialised retail trade in mainly other products decreased by 0.2%.
By Province, the greatest drop in the third quarter of 2012 in nominal sales in the retail sector was in Bizkaia, with a year-on-year decrease of 1.5%; nominal sales in Gipuzkoa were down by 1.0% and in Álava there was no appreciable change in the index (0.0%).
In constant prices, that is, without the price effect, sales in the retail trade sector fell by 3.5% in the third quarter.
For their part, retail trade sales, not including service stations, posted a real downturn at constant prices of 2.4% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year.
In the third quarter of 2012, there was a rise of 0.2% in real retail trade sales in the Basque Country with regards to the second quarter, once seasonal effects had been eliminated.
In turn, the real decrease in retail food trade stood at 1.9%, in retail trade of other products this real decrease stood at 2.8% with regards to the same quarter of 2011 and retail automotive fuel sales were down by 11.2%.
Within retail food trade the year-on-year evolution for specialised food trade was positive, with a rise of 0.8%, but non-specialised retail trade in food was down by 3.5%. For trade of other products there were decreases in all sectors. The sector specialising in personal equipment was down by 5.9%, household equipment experienced a decrease of 0.6%, the sector specialising in other consumer goods fell by 1.1% and sales in non-specialised establishments of mainly other products dropped by 2.6%, all in real terms.
The three Provinces registered decreases in their sales in real terms: Álava fell by 3.9%, Gipuzkoa was down by 3.5% and Bizkaia dropped by 3.4%.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the third quarter of 2012 was down by 1.2% on the second quarter.
