The life expectancy of Basque women, 85.7 years of age, the highest within the EU-27
Life expectancy for Basque men stands at 79 years of age, almost 7 years lower
Life expectancy is an important demographic indicator. Attention should be drawn to the significant increase that took place in the Basque Country in only 10 years, as life expectancy for the Basque population in 2000 stood at 76.4 years of age for men and 83.7 years of age for women, whilst in 2010 these figures stood at 79.0 and 85.7 years of age, respectively. The figure for women in 2010 is the highest amongst all countries within the EU-27. In Spain as a whole, the figures stood at 79.1 years of age for men and 85.3 years of age for women.
In terms of the EU-27 countries, Basque women are followed in life expectancy by the women of France (85.3 years of age), Malta and Sweden (83.6 years of age in each case) and Austria, Finland and Luxembourg (83.5 years of age in each case). Conversely, the lowest life expectancy is registered in Bulgaria (77.4 years of age), Romania (77.6 years of age), Latvia (78.4 years of age) and Hungary (78.6 years of age).
In the case of men within the EU-27, the Swedes, with a life expectancy of 79.6 years of age, are the most long-lived, followed by the Maltese (79.2 years of age) and the Dutch (78.9 years of age). Conversely, the lowest life expectancy for men is recorded in Lithuania (68 years of age), Latvia (68.6 years of age), Romania (70.1 years of age) and Bulgaria (70.3 years of age).
