Expenditure in R&D in the Basque Country in relation to GDP exceeds the average of the EU-27 countries
The figure has risen from 1.43% in 2000 to 2.08% in 2010
Expenditure in R&D in the Basque Country in relation to GDP, has risen above the average expenditure in the EU-27 countries. Specifically, is represented 2.08% of the Basque GDP, compared to 2.0% in the EU-27 and 1.39% in Spain.
The data show that the evolution of R&D in the Basque Country has been extremely positive in recent years. This is evident in the fact that expenditure in research and development rose from 1.43% of the GDP in 2000 to 1.44% in 2005, to 2.08% in 2010. The averages for the EU-27 as a whole in the same years were 1.86%, 1.83% and 2.00%, respectively. In the case of Spain, expenditure rose from 0.91% in 2000, to 1.12% in 2005 to 1.39% in 2010.
However, a number of countries within the EU-27 report figures for 2010 that are considerably higher than the figures of the Basque Country: Finland spent 3.87% of its GDP in R&D, Sweden, 3.42%, Denmark, 3.06%, Germany, 2.82%, Austria, 2.76%, France 2.26% and Slovenia, 2.11%.
Conversely, Romania, with expenditure of 0.47%, Cyprus, with expenditure of 0.50% and Bulgaria and Latvia, each with expenditure of 0.60%, are the EU-27 countries with the lowest expenditure in R&D in terms of their GDP.
