Press Release 29.06.12
Deaths fell by 2.7% in the fourth quarter of 2011 in the Basque Country
In 2011 184 people over the age of 100 died, 21 men and 163 women
In the fourth quarter of 2011 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 4944, 2.7% down on the same period of 2010, according to Eustat data. By province, in Álava there were 611 deaths, in Bizkaia there were 2781 and in Gipuzkoa 1552 people died.
The provisional data totals for 2011 recorded 19,103 deaths, of which 9850 were men and 9253 were women.
31.7% of the deaths that occurred in 2011, or 6057 deaths, were due to tumours. Following these were those caused by diseases of the circulatory system, 28.3% (5400 deaths) and, in third place, some way behind, were deaths associated with diseases of the respiratory system, which accounted for 8.8% (1675).
The cause of death continued to vary according to sex: amongst men, tumours caused 12% more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst the main cause of death amongst women was cardiovascular disease, followed in second place by tumours.
Amongst the deaths that occurred in 2011, 49 corresponded to children under one year of age, 14 boys and 35 girls. As regards the 184 individuals who died aged 100 or above, 163 were women and 21 were men. The increase in longevity is clear, particularly amongst the female sex, if we take into account the fact that in 1996 the number of deaths of women aged 100 or over stood at just 50.
Population growth was positive in the three provinces
With provisional data from 2011, population growth in the Basque Country was clearly positive with births exceeding deaths by 1903 individuals. Although this figure was positive in the three provinces, the volume was higher in Álava and Gipuzkoa with population growth of 974 and 882 individuals, respectively, whilst the figure for Bizkaia stood at 52.
