In 2011, expenditure on Scientific Research and Technological Development activities (R&D) fell by 0.3% in the Basque Country, according to provisional data provided by EUSTAT.
However, these expenditure and R&D personnel figures are based on the uneven performance of their implementation sectors.
Thus, the main sector, business, was down by 1.4% in internal expenditure and 0.3% in personnel for R&D activities.
In the Higher Education sector R&D expenditure and personnel were up by 2.4% and 5.1%, respectively.
Lastly, in the Public Administration sector expenditure was also up by 3.0% and the number of personnel dedicated to R&D was up by 15%.
Overall, the total number of R&D personnel in equivalent-to-full-time positions in the Basque Country rose by 1.8%.
Methodological note: Eustat has produced Advanced Data on the evolution of expenditure and R&D personnel in 2011. In order to do this, universities and bodies that together represent 87.8% of the total expenditure obtained the previous year have been taken into account, allowing an advance of the results that will be presented in a definitive form in November of this year to be brought forward to June.
