Donostia-San Sebastián for capitals and el Alto Deba for regions stand out for the percentage of innovating companies with 10 or more employees
Spending on innovation activities was concentrated in the Basque capitals
The percentage of companies of 10 or more employees with innovation in 2010 was 38.9% in the Basque Country as a whole, according to data provided by Eustat. This percentage varies, if we observe its distribution by regions.
Thus, special mention should be made of the regions Resto de Álava, with 53.7% of its companies with innovation in Álava, Plentzia-Mungia with 44.6% in Bizkaia and el Alto Deba in Gipuzkoa, which stood at 50.4%. As regards the regions with the lowest percentage of innovating companies, attention should be drawn to Llanada Alavesa (39.2%) in Álava, Encartaciones (30.6%) in Bizkaia and el Bajo Bidasoa (34.7%) in Gipuzkoa.
As far as the Basque capitals are concerned, Donostia-San Sebastián stands out with 55.3% of its companies innovating followed by Vitoria-Gasteiz, with 39.0%, and Bilbao, with 32.9%.
As regards spending on innovation activities, in companies of 10 or more employees, the main amounts were concentrated in the regions that include the capitals. Thus, in both Álava and Bizkaia, these regions accounted for more than 80% of the expenditure of their Province, whilst in Gipuzkoa it represented 43%. In Álava, out of 416.2 million in expenditure, 353.7 was in Llanada Alavesa and in Bizkaia, out of 1025.2 million, 820.2 million was spent in Gran Bilbao. In Gipuzkoa, however, out of 718.1 million, 307.5 was spent in Donostialdea, with noteable amounts distributed amongst other regions of this Province, such as Goierri with 122.6 million and el Alto Deba with 111.9 million. Moreover, more than 100 million euros was spent in Duranguesado in Bizkaia (107.9 million).
Finally, it should be pointed out that, with the exception of Bizkaia (+1.2%) and its region of Gran Bilbao (+1.9%), in both Álava (-6.3%) and Gipuzkoa (-5.8%) spending on innovation activities fell in 2010, which was also reflected in the decrease in spending in the majority of regions.
