One in five people had been educated at university level in the Basque Country in 2010
Half of the people with a university education were women
One in every five people had studied at university on the 1st of January 2010, with the number of individuals that had completed further or higher education going from 418,420 in 2006 to 461,097 in 2010, according to Eustat data.
Amongst the population aged 10 and above, the population of the Basque Country with university studies rose almost two percentage points from 2006, going from 21.5% to 23.3%. Four out of every five of these people was between 20 and 55 years old.
The evolution was also positive in relation to secondary and professional studies, with an increase of more than five percentage points since 2006. The percentage of the population that had studies equal or superior to secondary education increased from 54.75% to 60.23% in this period.
On the other hand, the illiteracy rate of the population aged 10 and above fell to 0.5%, with that of people aged 60 and above going from 1.7% in 2006 to 1.3% in 2010, and was considerably higher amongst women (1.7%) than amongst men (0.8%).
By districts, special mention should be made of Plentzia-Mungia in Bizkaia, where 31.9% of its population aged 10 and above had a university-level education, and that of Donostia-San Sebastián, with a figure of 25.6%. The districts of Montaña Alavesa (13.8%) and Rioja Alavesa (14.5%), where less than 15% of the population aged 10 and above had studied at university, were at the other end of the scale.
