Industrial activity in the Basque Country grew by 2.4% in June 2011

Compared to the previous month, May 2011, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 2.0%

Industrial production of the Basque Country in June 2011 grew 2.4% compared to the same month of 2010, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, May 2011, the industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 2.0%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.

By sector, and using the classification of the major industrial sectors, the evolution of the index for June 2011 compared to June 2010 shows noticeable differences. Intermediate Goods rose by 5.2% and Equipment Goods by 3.0%, but Energy posted a downturn of 8.1% and Consumer Goods overall fell by 0.7%, due to the drop experienced by Consumer Durables, which fell by 10.7%, whilst Consumer Non-durables increased by 2.4%.

The month-on-month variation in June 2011, compared to May 2011, also registered distinct changes for the main industrial groups. Intermediate goods fell by 1.5%, Energy by 1.0% and Equipment Goods by 0.1%, whereas Consumer Goods overall rose by 3.0%, Consumer Durables rose by 0.8% and Consumer Non-Durables posted an upturn of 3.7%.

The key sectors that posted the greatest increases in growth in June 2011 compared to the same month of the previous year were Machinery & equipment and Timber, paper, printing and reproduction with rates of 12.5% and 10.5%, respectively.

Contrastingly, Electrical equipment and material and Food, beverages and tobacco industries recorded a year-on-year downturn of 4.5% and 0.3%, respectively.

By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of June was positive in both Álava, where it grew by 6.6% and in Gipuzkoa which posted an increase of 2.9%, whilst in Bizkaia it fell by 0.2%. The month-on-month growth rate was negative in the three provinces. In Gipuzkoa it was down 4.1%, in Álava 1.0% and Bizkaia experienced a drop of 0.4%, with regards to May 2011.
