The number of deaths fell by 4.7% in the third quarter of 2010
More than half of the deceased were over 80 years old
In the third quarter of 2010, the number of deaths in the Basque Country totalled 4,070, which was 4-7% down on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. In terms of the sex of the deceased, 1,905 were women (47%) and 2,165 men (53%). By provinces, 510 people died in Álava, 2,284 in Bizkaia and 1,276 in Gipuzkoa.
If we consider the age at the time of death, only 12% were under 60, 32% were between 60 and 80 years old and people over 80 accounted for 56% of the total.
Tumours were the main cause of death: 1,372 people died for this reason (33.7%), followed by circulatory system diseases as the second cause of death and which accounted for the deaths of 1,132 people (27.8%). Respiratory diseases were in third place and caused 327 deaths (8.0%) in the months in question.
The cause of death differed according to sex, as tumours outnumbered circulatory system diseases among men, whereas the main cause was cardiovascular diseases among women, followed by tumours in second place. Respiratory diseases remained as the third cause of death for both sexes.
Fourteen of all the deaths in the third quarter of 2010 were infants under one, 8 of whom were boys and 6 girls.
The population growth rate in the third quarter of 2010 was positive, with a population increase of 1,189 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: Álava increased its population by 292 inhabitants, Bizkaia by 396 and Gipuzkoa by 501.
