TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY SURVEY (EIT) - 2009

Uniform distribution by districts of innovative companies with 10 or more employees in the Basque Country

Expenditure on innovation is concentrated in the Basque provincial capitals

The percentage of companies with 10 and more employees with innovation in 2009, was 38.9% for the Basque Country overall, according to Eustat data. This percentage is relatively uniform in terms of its distribution by districts.

Special mention should thus be made of Cantábrica Alavesa, with 45.0% of the companies with innovation in Álava, Gernika-Bermeo (46.1%) in Bizkaia and Alto Deba (46.8%) in Gipukzoa. Llanada Alavesa (36.4%) in Álava, Gran Bilbao (35.9%) in Bizkaia and Bajo Bidasoa (33.9%) in Gipuzkoa stood out as the districts with the smallest percentage of innovative companies.

As far as the Basque provincial capitals were concerned, Donostia-San Sebastián stood out with 42.2% of innovative companies, followed by Bilbao (36.9%) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (36.3%).

If this information is broken down into technological innovation and non-technological innovation, it can be seen that the regions that stand out are the same as the first case, in innovation, both in terms of those with the highest and lowest percentages of companies.

With respect to the expenditure on innovation activities, the highest levels are concentrated in the districts that include the provincial capitals that, except in Gipuzkoa, accounted for the greatest part of the expenditure in their province. In Alava, 366.4 million out of the 444.1 million euros spent were located in Llanada Alavesa and in Bizkaia, 805.2 out of 1,013.2 million euros were in Donostialdea, but other significant amounts were spent by other districts of Gran Bilbao. However, 348.7 million of the 762.6 million euros spent in Gipuzkoa were in Alto Deba (112.4 million) and Goierri (101.4 million).

It should be pointed out that expenditure on innovation activities grew steadily during the period in question (2006-2009) in the main districts of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, spending in Álava fell in 2009 to its 2006 levels.
