The number of deaths fell by 2.8% in the second quarter of 2010
4,445 people died in April, May and June 2010, 19.4% of whom were over 90 years old
In the second quarter of 2010, the number of deaths in the Basque Country totalled 4,445, which was 2.8% down on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. By provinces, 529 people died in Álava, 2,513 in Bizkaia and 1,403 in Gipuzkoa.
In terms of the distribution by sex of the deceased, 50.9% were men and 49.1% women. Overall, 19.4% of the deaths were people aged 90 and over, but this percentage rose to 30.4% in the case of women and fell to 8.8% for men.
Twelve of all deaths in the second quarter of 2010 were infants under one, 8 of whom were boys and 4 were girls.
Tumours were the main cause of death: 1.447 people died for this reason (32.6%), followed by circulatory system diseases as the second cause of death and which accounted for the deaths of 1,295 people (29,1%). Respiratory diseases were in third place and caused 362 deaths (8.1%) in the months in question.
As in previous quarters, the cause of death differed according to sex, as tumours outnumbered circulatory system diseases among men, whereas the main cause was cardiovascular diseases among women, followed by tumours. Respiratory diseases remained as the third cause of death for both sexes.
The population growth rate in the second quarter of 2010 was positive and the Basque Country increased its population by 718 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: Álava increased its population by 347 inhabitants, Bizkaia by 66 and Gipuzkoa by 305.
