Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 1.3% in October 2010
Compared to the previous month, September 2010, industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 1.1%
Industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 1.3% in October 2010, compared to the same month of 2009 in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to EUSTAT data. Compared to the previous month, September 2010, industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 1.1%, once corrected for seasonal effects.
By sector, and using the major industrial sector classification, the evolution of the index for October 2010 compared to October 2009 was only positive for Intermediary Goods, which grew by 3.8%. Energy fell by 3.6%, Capital Goods were down by 5.6% and Consumer Goods shrunk by 1.5% over all, as a result of the decrease posted by Consumer Durables (-13.1%), while Consumer Non-Durables rose by 2.2%.
Month-on-month fluctuations in October 2010, compared to September 2010, were also negative in the main industrial sectors: Capital Goods fell by 2.4%, Intermediate Goods were down by 0.5%, Energy by 0.4% and Consumer Goods decreased by 2.2%, as a result of the drop in Consumer Durables (-3.0%) and Consumer Non-Durables (-2.0%).
The key sectors that registered greatest growth in October 2010 compared to the same month of the previous year were Oil Refinery and Chemical Industry, with rates of 24.3% and 8.6%, respectively.
On the other hand, Non-Metal Industry (-17.5%) and Other Manufacturers (-15.6%) posted the largest year-on-year falls.
By province, the year-on-year performance of Industrial Production in October only registered growth in Álava, where it was up 0.1%. In Bizkaia, production was down by 0.4%, while it fell by 3.1% in Gipuzkoa. The month-on-month growth rate was positive in Álava, up 1.1% on September 2010, while it fell by 2.9% in Gipuzkoa and by 0.5% in Bizkaia.
