INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (IPI) AUGUST 2010
Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 6.7% in August 2010
Industrial production in the Basque Country grew by 6.7% in August 2010 with regard to the same month of 2009 in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to EUSTAT data. Compared to the previous month, July 2010, industrial production in the Basque Country increased by 1.0%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
By sector, and using the major industrial sector classification, the evolution of the index for August 2010 compared to August 2009 is positive in all sectors: Energy rose by 8.4%, Capital Goods were up by 4.8%, Intermediary Goods by 1.7% and Consumer Goods increased by 7.9% overall, as the result of the increase recorded by both Consumer Durables (5.2%) and Consumer Non-Durables D 8.3%).
The month-on-month variation in August 2010, compared to July 2010, was negative for Intermediary Goods, which were down by 2.8%. The other sectors performed positively: Energy rose by 3.0%, Capital Goods were up by 1.0% on July, and Consumer Goods increased by 2.2%, mainly as the result of the increase registered by Consumer Non Durables (2.8%) , as Consumer Durables posted a more moderate increase (0.3%).
The sectors that registered the greatest growth in August 2010 with respect to the same month of the previous year were Rubber & Plastic and Oil Refinery, with rates of 24.6% and 15.7%, respectively.
On the other hand, the Metal and Non-metal Mineral sector (-12.8%) and the Non-metal Industry (-4.1%) posted the largest year-on-year falls.
By province, the August year-on-year performance for the Industrial Production Index was positive in the three provinces: it rose by 17.4% in Álava, by 6.2% in Bizkaia and by 2.9% in Gipuzkoa. The month-on-month growth rate was positive in Álava and Bizkaia, with increases of 2.5% and 1.1%, respectively, compared to July 2010. There was no change in Gipuzkoa (0.0%).
