The number of deaths fell in the third quarter of 2009
4,186 people died in July, August and September 2009, only 2% of whom were under 40 years old.
During the third quarter of 2009, 4,186 people died, 51% of whom were male and 49% female, according to Eustat data. The figure was down 1.7% on the same period of the previous year. By provinces, 546 people died in Álava, 2,307 in Bizkaia and 1,333 in Gipuzkoa.
If we consider the age at the time of death, only 2% were under 40, 42% were between 40 and 80 years old and people over 80 accounted for 56% of the total.
Tumours were the main cause of death: 1.418 people died for this reason (33.9%), followed by circulatory system diseases as the second cause of death, which lead to 1,177 people dying (28,1%). Respiratory diseases were in third place and caused 332 deaths (7.9%) in the months in question.
The cause of death differed according to sex, as tumours outnumbered circulatory system diseases among men, whereas the main cause was cardiovascular diseases among women, followed by tumours. Respiratory diseases remained as the third cause of death for both sexes.
Twenty of all the deaths in the third quarter of 2009 were infants under one, 15 of whom were boys and 5 girls.
The population growth rate in the third quarter of 2009 was positive, with a population increase of 977 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: Álava increased its population by 219 inhabitants, Bizkaia by 381 and Gipuzkoa by 377.
