PUBLIC EDUCATION EXPENDITURE AND FUNDING STATISTICS 2007
Expenditure of public education centres increased by 13.9% between 2005 and 2007
The expenditure per student was 5,185 euros, 14.2% up on two years earlier
Total expenditure on public education centre in 2007 came to 1,689 million euros, which was 13.9% up on 2005, according to EUSTAT data. This expenditure represented 2.6% of GDP in 2007. Public education centres accounted for 64.7% of total expenditure on education, given that expenditure on public education centres came to 922 million euros.
The majority of the expenditure on public centres, 92%, was earmarked to fund current activities and the remaining 8% to investments. As for current expenditure, 1,562 million euros, 93.2% was devoted directly to teaching, 1% to complementary activities and 5.8% to complementary services, mainly canteen and school transport services. Under the teaching heading, the largest sum, 89%, was allocated to personnel expenses.

Turning to the type of education, centres offering pre-university levels represented 75% of total expenditure, while universities accounted for 21% and specialised education centres for the remaining 4%. If compared with private centres, public universities contributed 11% more to total expenditure.
During the two-year period 2005-2007, the greatest growth in expenditure by type of education was in infant and primary education, which increased its total expenditure by 19.7%, the university increased by 12.8% and secondary education by 10.9%.
On the other hand, the rhythm of growth for education expenditure was greater per student (14.2%) than per unit (9.6%).
Educational expenditure per school unit in public centres came to 88,408 euros in infant education, while it stood at 75,879 euros in primary. In middle-level education, it stood at 131,056 for E.S.O. (compulsory secondary education), 178,832 euros for upper secondary studies and 140,698 and 156,908 euros for medium-grade and higher-grade Vocational Training, respectively.
Education expenditure per student came to 5,669 euros in infant education, while it was 5,085 euros in primary. With respect to middle-level education, it ranged from 8,632 euros in E.S.O, 7,410 in Upper Secondary and 11,115 and 11,189 euros in medium- and higher-grade Vocational Training, respectively. In specialised education (languages, music, dance and arts & crafts), it was 1,292 euros per student and 6,148 euros in university.
Total income for public centres totalled 1.734 million euros, with 99.8% corresponding to current income and 7% to capital income. The main components of current income were public subsidies, which accounted for 92.2% of the total. Private sources contributed 5.7% of current income, mainly through school fees (2.8%) and complementary services and activities (2.7%).
