MORTALITY STATISTICS (EDEF) 2nd Quarter 2008



The mortality figures remained stable in the second quarter of 2008



Deaths of people over 100 years old decreased by 22.2%



In the second quarter of 2008, 4,303 people died in the A.C. of the Basque Country, 0.4% down on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. By provinces, 531 people died in Álava, which was a drop of 1.8%, 2,341 in Bizkaia (-0.9%), while Gipuzkoa was the only province that saw a rise in the number of deaths (+0.9%).


Out of the 4,303 people who died, 2,301 were men and 2,002 women. The male death rate increase by 2.3%, while the rate for women fell by 3.4%.


As regards the ages of the deceased, nearly 76.4% were 70 or over, with the largest group aged between 80 to 89 years old, which accounted for 36.1% of the total deaths. Twenty-eight people aged 100 or over died, 22.2% more than in the same quarter of 2007 and 89.3% of whom were women.


Fifteen of all the deaths in the first quarter of 2008 were infants under one, 8 of whom were boys and 7 girls.


The population growth rate in the second quarter of 2008 was positive, with a population increase of 1,120 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: +280 in Álava, +423 in Bizkaia and +417 in Gipuzkoa.
