The figure of 4,304 deaths during the second quarter of 2007 meant a 3% increase in relation to the same period of last year, according to EUSTAT data. By province, 540 people died in Álava, 2,362 in Bizkaia and 1,402 in Gipuzkoa.
The main cause of death was tumours, with 1,398 people dying for this reason (32.5%). The second cause of death was circulatory system disease, which gave rise to 1,234 deaths (28.7%) and the third place was held by respiratory disease, which caused 359 deaths (8.3%) during these months.
The reason for these deaths was different according to sex. Among men tumours (40.1%) surpassed circulatory system diseases (25.6%), while among women the main cause was cardiovascular disease (31.9%) and in second place was tumours (24.2%).
Among the deaths that occurred during the second quarter of 2007, 22 corresponded to children aged under one year old, 8 boys and 14 girls.
Natural growth in the A.C. of the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2007 was positive, with an increase of 759 people. There were positive balances in all three provinces, coming to 211 in Álava, 200 in Bizkaia and 348 in Gipuzkoa.
