The 4,128 deaths in the second quarter of 2006 represent a 5.6% decrease with regard to the same period the year before, according to EUSTAT data. By provinces, 490 persons died in Álava, 2,268 in Bizkaia and 1,370 en Gipuzkoa.
The main cause of death was tumours: 1,285 persons died of this cause (31.1%); the second cause of death was circulatory system diseases, which led to 1,256 deaths (30.4%) and the third was respiratory diseases, which over these months were the cause of 365 deaths (8.8%).
The cause of death was different according to sex, as between males tumours (38.4%) were more common than circulatory system diseases (25.8%), while among women the main cause was cardiovascular diseases (35.6%) and in second place tumours (23%).
Among the deaths that took place in the third quarter of 2006, 22 corresponded to under one year olds, 6 boys and 16 girls.
The natural population growth in the A.C. of the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2006 was positive, with an increase of 858 persons. By Provinces there were positive balances in all three, with 246 in Álava, 268 in Bizkaia and 344 in Gipuzkoa.
