4,166 persons died in the third quarter of 2001 in the A.C.
of Euskadi, 9.5% more than in the same period the year before, according to
the latest EUSTAT data. By provinces, 503 persons died in Álava, 2,303
in Bizkaia and 1,360 in Gipuzkoa.
The main cause of death was tumours: 1,347 deaths were due
to this reason (32.3%); followed by, as the second cause of death, circulatory
system diseases, which led to 1,230 deaths (29.5%). Thirdly, and at some distance,
were respiratory system diseases, which caused 340 deaths (8.2%).
The cause of death was different according to sex, as tumours
were more common among males than circulatory system diseases, while among females
the main cause of death was cardiovascular diseases and tumours in second place.
Among the deaths that occurred in the third quarter of 2001,
21 corresponded to children under one year of age, 11 male and 10 female.
The natural population growth in the third quarter of 2001
was positive for the whole of the A.C. of Euskadi, with a population increase
of 300 persons. By provinces, there were positive balances in Alava and Gipuzkoa,
which increased their populations by 134 and 200 inhabitants, respectively.
In the case of Bizkaia, on the other hand, the number of deaths was higher than
births (-29).
