4,164 people died in the second quarter of 2001 in the A.C.
of Euskadi, a similar figure to the same period the previous year. By provinces,
509 people died in Álava, 2,307 in Bizkaia and 1,348 in Gipuzkoa.
The main cause of death was tumours: 1,324 people died due
to this cause (31.8%); followed by circulatory systems diseases, which led to
1,304 deaths (31.3%). The third cause, at some distance, was respiratory diseases,
which was the cause of 356 deaths (8.5%). Circulatory system diseases were the
main cause the same quarter last year.
The cause of death varied according to sex, as among males
tumours were more common than circulatory system diseases, while among females
the main cause of death was cardiovascular diseases followed by tumours.
Among the deaths that occurred in the second quarter of 2001,
12 corresponded to children under one year of age, 11 boys and 1 girl.
Natural growth in the second quarter of 2001 was positive for
the whole of the A.C. of Euskadi, with an increase in population of 293 persons.
By Provinces, there were positive balances in Alava and Gipuzkoa, which increased
their populations by 128 and 200 inhabitants, respectively. In the case of Bizkaia,
however, the number of deaths was higher than births (-35).
