Staff according to occupation (R&D)

  • Research staff: Personnel involved in the conception or creation of new knowledge. They are responsible for researching and improving or developing concepts, theories, models, equipment and instruments, software and operating methods. Also included are personnel who perform management and administration duties directly related to R&D tasks, as well as post-graduate grant-recipients or student trainees who engage in research and development activities.
  • They normally have an advanced university degree education level but, for the purposes of this survey, those individuals who, lacking the aforementioned degree, occupy jobs characteristic of this level, are also included in this section.

  • Technical staff : Constituted by individuals who take part in R&D projects by conducting scientific and technical tasks, normally under the supervision of research staff. Many of them are qualified technicians (technical engineers), but others are not, although they occupy positions of comparable level and are therefore included in this group.
  • Their tasks include: performing bibliographical searches, developing software, performing experiments, tests and analyses, preparing the materials and equipment necessary for the research, making calculations, tables and graphs, and carrying out statistical surveys and interviews.

  • Auxiliary staff : The remaining support staff which includes qualified and unqualified craft-workers, as well as office and secretary staff that take part in R&D projects directly related to these projects.
