Scientific research and technological development (R&D)

R&D activities are defined to include the following:
All creative activities undertaken systematically, with the objective of increasing the wealth of scientific and technical knowledge, as well as the use of the results obtained to achieve new devices, products, materials or processes. This activity includes basic research, applied research, and technological development.

  • a) Fundamental or basic research: Original work undertaken with the objective of acquiring new scientific knowledge. It is not principally orientated to one specific objective or technical application.
  • b) Applied research: Original work undertaken with the objective of acquiring new scientific knowledge or techniques. However, this research is focussed towards a determined practical objective.
  • c) Technological Development: Consists of the use of existing scientific knowledge to produce new materials, devices, products, procedures, systems or services or to substantially improve existing ones, including the development of prototypes and pilot installations.
  • The following are not included in R&D activities:

  • Education and training
  • Scientific activities and connected techniques
  • Industrial activities
