Permanent grassland

Land used for several consecutive years (usually 5 years or more) to produce grass, whether through cultivation (sown) or naturally (spontaneous), which is not included in the holding’s crop rotation.

These areas can be used for grazing, mown for silage and hay or used for renewable energy production.

Includes:
- All harvested areas of permanent grassland, regardless of use.
- Areas of permanent grassland used for renewable energy production.
- Pastures and meadows that can normally be used for intensive grazing.
- Rough grazings, which are low-yielding permanent grazings, normally located on poor soil in hilly areas, which are not normally improved by using fertilisers, tillage, sowing or drainage, and which are only suitable for extensive grazing.
- Permanent grassland no longer used for production purposes and eligible for subsidy payments.
- Land taken out of production for more than 5 years which is maintained in good agricultural and environmental condition.

The following types are considered:

Permanent pastures and meadows, except rough grazings

Good or moderate quality land, characteristic of areas with a certain degree of humidity, which may receive some care, such as reseeding, fertilisation and rolling or levelling.

They are used for the production of grass and their primary use is carried out through mowing. They can normally be used for intensive grazing.

Includes:
- All harvested areas of permanent grassland, regardless of use.
- Areas of permanent grassland used for renewable energy production.

Rough grazings

These are areas of low-yielding permanent grassland, usually located on low-quality soil (e.g. on hilly land at high altitudes), which are not normally improved by using fertilisers, tillage, sowing or drainage. These areas can generally only be used for extensive grazing and are not normally mown or are mown extensively as they cannot support a high density of animals.

Includes:
- Stony ground, heath and moorland.
- Areas of rough grazings that are mown and not used for animal grazing, often of high natural value and subject to environmental commitments.

Permanent grassland no longer used for production purposes and eligible for the payment of subsidies

Permanent grassland and meadows not used for production, which, in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 1307/2013 or, where applicable, the most recent legislation, are maintained in a state suitable for grazing or tillage without the need for preparation requiring more than the usual agricultural methods or machinery, and which are eligible for financial support.
