Objectives
Service provision is an important aspect of health care systems. Therefore, a series of indicators is required to assess the availablity, access and distribution of health care provision. The number of beds is one of the indicators related to that component of the level of health care provision (WHO).
The number of beds is a fundamental piece of information regarding the physical resources available to care for patients in hospitals.

Concepts and Definitions
Bed: refers to hospital beds used for the ongoing care of admitted patients. Incubators and cots are included as beds, except for those used for healthy new borns. Emergency observation beds, beds for companions and temporary beds, those used by the staff of the centre and for day hopsitals, special examinations, pre-anaesthesia and for other purposes are not included.
This indicator considers the beds in operation, i.e. those that have been available during the year.
The indicator is obtained as a quotient and expressed by one hundred thousand inhabitants.
Numerator:
Average beds maintained and staffed in hospitals in one year.
Denominator:
Estimated mid-year population * 100,000.
