Sample design

The surveying is based on a sample of 7,500 individuals aged 10 or over. It is based on a supplementary sample that eventually allows a fixed sample size to be reached (5,000 individuals), taking into account that there are units (individuals) who are not going to respond.

As far as the effective number of surveys is concerned, the 5,016 previous responder size was maintained, (which could be known as the net size), and was increased in line with the formula used in the European Social Survey [ n_gross=n_net/ (RR*ER)], that is to say, taking into account the response rate and the eligibility rate to calculate the necessary sample to obtain a net sample size. The net sample is finally 5,016 individuals.

The sample selection followed a two-stage design: the first consisted of selecting the census sections; and then in the sample framework defined by a Population Registry, the individuals to fill in the diary were selected at random, with equal probability of the persons in the section.

Even though in the two first surveys conducted with the individuals selected to fill in the diary were 16 or over, in 2003, the age was set at 10 years and over to adapt to the methodology proposed by the Guidelines for Harmonised European Time Use Surveys” (3.1 Sample Design).
