Methodology and sample design

The methodology employed in this study is quantitative and based on individual interviews on a representative sample of Basque youth, from 15 to 29 years of age, from each of the Provinces of the Autonomous Region of the Basque Country. A total of 1500 surveys have been designed: 400 in Álava, 600 in Bizkaia and 500 in Gipuzkoa. The interviews were carried out in homes via structured questionnaires with the majority of their questions being closed, although some required open and spontaneous responses from the respondents. The interviews were carried out in Basque or Spanish, depending on the preference of the respondent. The selection procedure for the respondents was multistage and stratified. Firstly, the number of routes (from 20 surveys each) per province was determined: 20 in Álava, 30 in Bizkaia and 25 in Gipuzkoa. The subsequent selection of the municipalities in which to carry out the questionnaires was adjusted to the previously established number of routes, and youth distribution in the different municipalities, classified by size (under 10,000 inhabitants, between 10,000 and 120,000 inhabitants and capitals). More specifically, the distribution of the 20 routes in Álava was as follows: 3 routes in municipalities of under 10,000 inhabitants (completed in one or more municipalities sharing the same characteristics), 2 routes in municipalities of over 10,000 inhabitants and 15 routes in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The distribution of the 30 routes in Bizkaia was as follows: 6 routes in municipalities of under 10,000 inhabitants, 15 routes in municipalities of over 10,000 inhabitants and 9 routes in Bilbao. Lastly, the 25 routes in Gipuzkoa were distributed as follows: 5 routes in municipalities of under 10,000 inhabitants, 13 routes in municipalities of over 10,000 inhabitants and 7 routes in Donostia-San Sebastián. For respondents aged 15, parental permission was sought prior to carrying out the survey. Furthermore, in all cases, we asked to carry out the survey in a certain intimacy, that is, without the presence of family members, in order to avoid any influence in the sincerity of the respondent when answering certain especially delicate questions (relating to sex, consumption of drugs, political persuasion, etc.). At the end of the interview the respondent was asked for their telephone number in order to carry out a quality control process in relation the surveys. The purpose of this control is to guarantee the correct completion of the routes, the quotas and the questionnaire itself. In the event of detecting errors they have been corrected where possible or, in other cases, the surveys have been annulled and substituted by others taken in municipalities with the same characteristics, on respondents with the same sex and age quotas and the same limitation of occupancy and residence. The sampling error, attributable in the theoretical case of the sample having been strictly random, is recorded as ± 2.6 % for the overall youth in the Basque Country, with a confidence level of 95.5 % y p=q=0.5.
