Objectives
The Survey on Tourist Establishments has the following objectives:
a. To know the movements of visitors (visits and places occupied) occurring in the tourist establishments analysed (hotel establishments, rural tourism establishments and country cottages and tourist apartments) in the Basque Country.
b. To obtain occupation rates, both in terms of rooms (or apartments) and of places and in relation to the visitors' average length of stay.
c. To reflect the existing supply of hotel accommodation.
d. To provide information on employment in this sector.
e. Create economic profitability indicators of the hotel sector.
Scope
- Population:
- The population to which the research relates is made up of hotel establishments - hotels, hostels and guesthouses -, rural tourism establishments and country cottages, as well as tourist apartments located in the Basque Country.
- Geographical:
- The research covers the whole territory of the Basque Country and supplies information both at the level of the province and on other geographical areas of interest to tourism.
The geographical areas defined for hotel establishments are:
• Capital, metropolitan area, coast and inland, for Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa
• Capital, Rioja alavesa and the rest of Álava, for Álava
For rural establishments:
• Metropolitan area, coast and inland, for Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa
• Rioja alavesa and the rest of Álava, for Álava

- The survey is monthly and continuous throughout the twelve months of the year.

Sample desing
The criteria used to stratify the various tourist establishments and the period surveyed are outlined as follows:
- Geographical stratification: According to the areas defined for hotel establishments and for rural accommodation; and according to the Basque Country provinces for tourist apartments.
- Geographical stratification: According to the areas defined for the hotel establishments and for rural accommodation.
- Stratification by categories: Information is supplied by category (stars) for hotel establishments, differentiating between them as follows:
• Group 1: Hotels and Hostels of 5,4 and 3 stars
• Group 2: Hotels, hostels and guesthouses of 2 stars and 1 star
- Selection of the reference weeks: Information is requested from Group 2 establishments on seven consecutive days that are assigned by drawing lots on a weekly basis, thereby covering, between all establishments, all days of the reference month.
