Objectives
The 2006 Demographic and Validation Poll is a statistic sampling research project in which it is intended to attain two objectives:
- Currently the official population data proceed from the continuous updating of the municipal registers, a process that started off in 1996, the year of the latest municipal register renewal. In 2001 a population and housing census carried out, but in 2006 the lack of a census operation that could validate the population figures proceeding from the municipal registers made us propose a sampling operation that would adjust both data on population and empty and occupied housing, apart from completing a certain amount of information that is impossible to obtain from administrative sources, such as data on the knowledge and use of the Basque language.
- The second objective consists of gathering the demographic history of the people polled. This model of data gathering corresponds to the method of retrospective approximation to demographic phenomena, such as marriage rate, fertility, etc., and this model relates population with the demographic phenomena that are susceptible of affecting it.
The poll pursues the attainment of the following objectives:
- The study of fertility, both for women as a whole and for married women, focussed towards more precise demographic projections.
- The study of fertility in men and women and the causes of dissolution of marriages. Other stable relationship models are also studied.
- The true size of families and preferences on the number of children and periodicity of births.
- The formation of families and the de-cohabitation of children from parents’ homes.
- The evolution of types of families throughout the life cycle.
Scope
- Population scope:
- Population that the operation refers to: the set of people who live in family housing used throughout the year or most of the year as the habitual residence.
- Geographic scope:
- Territorial scope the operation refers to: The Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. The maximum breakdown level is to correspond with each of its Historical Territories.
- Temporal scope:
- The date of reference is in any case November 1st 2006. On the other hand, be it to say that the temporal scope of the information in the poll is diverse for the various sections. It is possible to distinguish various temporal scopes:
- For people it is the biographical period that takes place from the date of the demographic event (marriage, birth of a child, the first migration, etc.) up to the current moment. Logically, it is a different temporal scope for each subject.
- The week before the poll is taken is taken as a reference for information on economic activity.
The periodicity of this poll is every 5 years.
Poll design.
The sampling of the 2006 poll includes a total of 30.000 houses for the whole of the Territory of the Autonomous Community. Initially, it is decided that the size of the sampling of occupied housing is 25,000 and 5000 empty houses.
For this purpose, a distribution proportional to the square root of occupied houses in each Historical Territory is opted for.
Once the distribution of the sampling for each Historical Territory is made, it is then distributed proportionally between the municipality size strata, of which there are four:
- Over 100,000 inhabitants, concretely, the capitals of the Historical Territories.
- 40,000-100,000 inhabitants
- 10,s000-40,000 inhabitants
- Up to 10,000
But not all of them will receive the same treatment:
- In empty houses only page A of the questionnaire is to be completed.
- In occupied houses with an even-numbered questionnaire (approximately 12,500 houses) the whole of the questionnaire is to be completed.
- In occupied houses with an odd-numbered questionnaire (approximately 12,500 houses) the questionnaire is to be completed up to page H (page H included).
After that, information is to be gathered on all the individuals that inhabit the house at the time of the interview by means of one or more informants.
The Demographic Poll operation (DP) has been carried out over the years (sometimes in conjunction with the validation poll) in dates that are near census dates.
In comparison with other years, there are some variations in 2006. In the first place, there is the sample of occupied and empty houses. Besides, the poll is going to be conducted on only half of the occupied houses, to complete the sampling of 12,500, similar to that of other years for the DP.
