Objective

In relation to the unemployed population, a society suffers periods of recession and when it shows a steady increase in the unemployment rates. An indicator of these periods of economic recession is the unemployment rate.

The unemployment ratio or unemployment rate of the male population aged 16 to 74 is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed men whose ages fall between 16 and 74 by the active male population aged 16 and over. The indicator is based on the Survey on the Population in Relation to Activity (PRA). The survey covers the whole population living in “households” and excludes all those who live in collective dwellings, such as refuges/shelters, student residences, hospitals, etc

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the unemployed population covers all those people who, in the reference week, do not have a salaried job or an independent job, are seeking employment and are also available for work. Since 2002 the means of making this definition operational has changed in accordance with the European Commission Regulation 1897/2000. From this year onwards, unemployed people were considered to be those who, in addition to fulfilling the above conditions, had carried out what the said regulation considers to be active steps to seek employment during the previous four weeks.
