Purpose

One of the priorities of the Europe 2020 strategy is sustainable growth, promoting an economy that uses resources more effectively, and is greener and more competitive.

The association between an increase in energy consumption and economic growth needs to be broken, and society should be made aware of the environmental challenges (climate change and air pollution) and socio-economic challenges (energy inefficiency, external dependency, loss of competitiveness).

Concepts and Definitions

Final energy consumption is understood to be all energy supplied to industry, transport, homes, services and agriculture (it excludes supply to the energy transformation sector and the energy industry itself).

This quantity is useful for measuring energy consumption in the place of end use and comparing it to the Europe 2020 objectives. It is expressed in thousands of equivalent tonnes of oil (ktoe).

It is directly obtained from the annual EUSKADI ENERGIA publications of the Basque Energy Board (EVE). These reports are a product of diffusion from the official “Energy data of the Basque Country” statistics.

The indicator is expressed as a numerical index with 2005 as the base year.
