LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY. DECEMBER 2019
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 0.9% in 2019
Food sales rose by 1.3% and sales of other products increased by 0.3%
In the accumulated total for 2019, sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 0.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, in homogeneous terms of the working calendar and at constant prices, according to Eustat data. In this period, food sales saw a 1.3% upturn overall, and other products achieved an increase of 0.3%.

By province, in Gipuzkoa sales over the year as a whole rose by 1.0% at constant prices and with respect to the previous year; they were also up by 0.9% in both Bizkaia and Álava.
The number of individuals employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.6% in 2019 compared to the previous year.
Analysing the data, in December 2019 sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country experienced a year-on-year downturn at constant prices of 1.0% in homogenous terms of the working calendar. Compared to November, sales were down 2.5% in deseasonalised terms.
Sales of food products at large stores and food chains reflected a fall of 1.7%, and sales corresponding to other items were up 0.5%.
There were positive and negative variations in the provinces: Álava saw an increase of 0.5%, whereas in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa sales were down by 0.9% and 1.7%, respectively.
