MARRIAGE STATISTICS. I/2019
There were 1,004 marriages registered in the first quarter of 2019, 1.8% up on the previous year
90.8% of husbands and 86.4% of wives were aged 30 or over
The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the first quarter of 2019 rose to 1,004, 1.8% up on those in the same quarter of the previous year (986), according to Eustat data. Of the total number of marriages, 38 were between people of the same sex (12 between men and 26 between women) and the remaining 966 were heterosexual marriages.
The first quarter of the year is characterised by the low number of marriages celebrated, particularly in January and February, which in 2019 saw 228 and 288 weddings, respectively.
As has occurred in recent years, in this quarter there was a high proportion of civil marriages: 91.6% of heterosexual marriages, as well same-sex marriages, all civil, to which the total percentage rises to 95.4%.
In the 1,004 weddings in the first quarter of 2019, 934 men and 950 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage; the remainder of the spouses resided outside of the Basque Country. For 746 spouses (79.9%) this was their first marriage, whilst 17 widowers and 171 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into their first marriage was slightly higher than that for men, standing at 764 (80.4%); the number of widows rose to 7 and the number of divorcees stood at 179.
As regards the distribution of marriages according to the age of the couples, 90.8% of husbands were aged 30 or over, whilst this percentage decreased to 86.4% for wives. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the proportion rose for men (+0.4 points), whereas it decreased slightly for women (-0.5 points).
In the first quarter of 2019, 20.6% of recently married women and 15.7% of recently married men were foreign nationals. This percentage was down in comparison with the same period in 2018 both for wives (-0.9 points) and husbands (-0.1 points).
