Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 34.2% in November 2018

Overnight stays in hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole were up 15% in all three provinces in November 2018

Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in November 2018 stood at 20,097, up 34.2% on those registered in November2017, according to EUSTAT data.

There was a year-on-year positive trend in overnight stays in in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they increased by 88.6%, in Álava they grew by 21.8% and in Bizkaia they were up by 14.5%.

Furthermore, there were 4,795 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in November 2018, which was a rise of 12.1%. By provinces, the number of visitors was down 3.1% in Álava, but there was an increase of 16.6% in Bizkaia, and 15.0% in Gipuzkoa.

This November the average length of stay was 4.19 days, above the average length of stay of 3.50 days registered in November 2017. In Álava there was an increase from 6.58 days last year to 8.27 days in November of this year; in Gipuzkoa, there was also a rise from 2.49 days in November 2017 to 4.09 days this November, however, in Bizkaia the average length of stay fell from 2.85 days in November 2017 to 2.80 days in November 2018.

Tourist balance for November 2018

In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 242,000 visitors in November 2018, which was an increase of 7.1% on the same month of the previous year. 47.9% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 8.0%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 37.7% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 9.2% and in Álava, with 14.4% of visitors, there was a fall of 0.4%.

Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 15.0%, with increases in all three provinces: 18.1% in Gipuzkoa, 14.7% in Bizkaia and 8.2% in Álava.
