Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 6.7% in August 2018

Between July and August visitor numbers were up by 4.7% and overnight stays by 5.6%

There were 354,146 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2018, 22,167 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 6.7%, according to Eustat data. The number of visitors was up 9.7% in Gipuzkoa and 6.9% in Bizkaia, whereas there was a drop of 1.1% in Álava.

Furthermore, overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2018 reached 765,461, which was an increase of 7.3% on those registered in August of the previous year; that is, there were 52,396 more overnight stays. In Gipuzkoa they rose by 9.2%, in Bizkaia they were up 7.8% and in Álava they increased by 0.8%.

The number of visitors from within Spain rose by 6.7% in the Basque Country compared to August of the previous year, and the number of visitors from abroad increased by 6.6%. In the case of Álava, entries of Spanish visitors saw a 0.2% downturn and there was a 2.6% drop in the case of foreign visitors. In Bizkaia, the number of Spanish visitors was up by 8.9%, while the number of visitors from abroad rose by 4.7%. In Gipuzkoa there was an increase in Spanish visitor numbers of 7.4%, whereas the number of foreign visitors rose by 12.1%.

This August the average length of stay was 2.16 days, slightly above the average length of stay of 2.15 days registered in August 2017. In Álava the average length of stay stood at 1.94 days, improving on the1.91 days obtained in August 2017; in Bizkaia there was an increase from 2.12 days in August 2017 to 2.14 days this August, and in Gipuzkoa the average length of stay was down from 2.29 days in August 2017 to 2.27 this August.

There was an increase of 2.8 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 77.7% in August 2017 to 80.5% in August this year. In Álava the bed occupancy rate rose by 0.9 percentage points, standing at 73.6% in August 2018. In Bizkaia, the bed occupancy rate rose by 3.2 percentage points, reaching 80.2%. In Gipuzkoa the bed occupancy rate improved by 2.9 percentage points, standing at 83.2% in August 2018.

The occupancy rate per room also registered an increase, with a 2.3 percentage point rise for the Basque Country overall, reaching 85.8%. In Álava it was up by 2.2 percentage points, standing at 79.5%, and in Bizkaia it increased by 1.3 percentage points, reaching 85.2%. Meanwhile, in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 3.3 percentage points, registering 88.8% occupancy per room.

The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in August this year was in Donostia-San Sebastián (89.2%), followed by Gipuzkoa Costa (87.9%) and Bilbao (84.2%).

Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in August 2018, with 82.4% of places occupied, whilst the registered occupancy stood at 79.7% on weekdays.

Finally, with regards to the profitability indicators of the sector, the average daily rate (ADR) of hotels in the Basque Country stood at 110.1 euros in August 2018, 4.9% up on the year before. The average rate stood at 78.1 euros in Álava, where it rose by 1.5%; 91.6 euros in Bizkaia, with an increase of 5.2%, and 142.0 euros in Gipuzkoa, where it was up by 4.3%.

The revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the Basque Country overall, which is dependent on the occupancy rate of hotel establishments, stood at 94.5 euros in August 2018, a 7.7% increase on August 2017. The RevPAR stood at 62.1 euros in Álava, 78.1 euros in Bizkaia, and 126.0 euros in Gipuzkoa.

The occupancy rate per room during the festivals of the three Basque capitals varied between 88.8% in Vitoria-Gasteiz and 96.2% in Donostia-San Sebastián

In Vitoria-Gasteiz there were 7,466 visitors and 14,680 overnight stays during the 2018 Virgen Blanca festival, over the dates of 4 to 09 August 2017 (6 nights), with an occupancy rate per bed of 78.4% and per room of 88.8%. In relation to 2017, there were decreases in visitor numbers (-9.6%) and overnight stays (-3.1%).

In Donostia-San Sebastián, during the Aste Nagusia celebrations, between 11 and 18 August 2018 (8 nights), 19,257 visitors and 47,001 overnight stays were recorded, with an occupancy rate per bed of 91.8% and per room of 96.2%. Compared to 2017, when the festival was held between 12 and 19 August (8 nights), both visitors numbers and overnight stays increased, by 7.5% and 11.9%, respectively.

Visitor numbers during the 2018 Bilbao Aste Nagusia Festival increased to 29,363 in the hotel establishments of the capital of Bizkaia. These were visits that occurred from 18 to 26 August 2018 (9 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays was 62,119, with an occupancy rate per bed of 83.9% and per room of 89.1%. Compared to 2017, when the Semana Grande (Big Week) festival was held between 19 and 27 August (9 nights), visitor numbers increased by 8.0% and overnight stays by 7.4%.

Balance for July and August Visitors were up by 4.7% and overnight stays by 5.6%

In the months of July and August as a whole visitor numbers to the Basque Country rose by 4.7%, in other words there were 30,419 more visitors than in the same two months of 2017. Gipuzkoa saw a 6.8% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a rise in visitor numbers of 5.4%, but in Álava there was a drop of 2.4%.

Overnight stays registered a rise of 5.6% in the Basque Country overall in July and August 2018 compared to July and August 2017. In Gipuzkoa they were up by 7.5%, in Bizkaia they increased by 6.0%, but in Álava they were down 1.2%.

The bed occupancy rate achieved in July and August 2018 for the Basque Country overall stood at 75.4%, an improvement of 1.8 percentage points on the 73.6% obtained in the same period of 2017.

In rural accommodation, visitor numbers decreased by 2.0% and overnight stays rose by 6.6% in August 2018

There were 23,599 visitors to rural accommodation in the Basque Country in August, 2.0% less than the same month of the previous year. By province, the number of visitors was up by 20.8% in Álava, in Bizkaia there was a drop of 5.2%, and in Gipuzkoa there was a decrease of 6.6%. The 5,243 visitors originating from abroad signified a rise of 12.0% with regards to those received a year ago and represented 22.2% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain fell by 5.3%.

Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 94,619 overnight stays in August, with an increase of 6.6% with respect to the same month of the previous year. At a provincial level, in Álava they increased by 27.6% and in Bizkaia they rose by 10.8%; in Gipuzkoa, however, they fell by 0.3%.

The bed occupancy rate stood at 67.7% with an increase of 4.9 percentage points on the figures obtained in August 2017. Álava recorded a rise of 9.8 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 47.6%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate was 71.1%, which meant an increase of 6.3 percentage points in relation to August 2017, and Gipuzkoa saw a rise of 2.4 percentage points, reaching an occupancy rate this August of 74.3%.

Finally, the average length of stay per visitor increased this August with respect to August 2017, going from 3.69 days a year ago to 4.01 this last month.

Balance for July and August in rural accommodation: Visitors were up by 0.4% and overnight stays by 7.5%

In the months of July and August as a whole visitor numbers to the Basque Country rose by 0.4%, in other words there were 173 more visitors than in the same two months of 2017. Álava saw a 5.9% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a rise in visitor numbers of 2.0%, but in Gipuzkoa there was a drop of 2.1%.

Overnight stays registered a rise of 7.5% in the Basque Country overall in July and August 2018 compared to July and August 2017. In Álava they rose by 14.8%, in Bizkaia they increased by 13.3% and in Gipuzkoa they were up by 2.8%.

The bed occupancy rate achieved in July and August 2018 for the Basque Country overall stood at 58.1%, an improvement of 3.7 percentage points on the 54.4% obtained in the same period of 2017.
