Deaths increased by 3.8% in the fourth quarter of 2017 in the Basque Country
In 2017 as a whole there was a 1.9% rise
In the fourth quarter of 2017 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 5,634, 3.8% up on the same period of 2016, according to Eustat data. By province, in Álava there were 738 deaths, in Bizkaia there were 3,084 and in Gipuzkoa 1,812 people died.
The provisional data totals for 2017 recorded 21,629 deaths, of which 10,807 were women and 10,822 were men. The number of deaths increased by 1.9% compared to 2016.
Amongst the deaths that occurred last year, 40 corresponded to children under one year of age, 16 girls and 24 boys. On the other hand, in relation to the 274 people who died at the age of 100 or more, 241 were women and 33 were men. There was an increase in longevity of those who died, especially in the case of women, as in 2017 there were 30 more deaths among the population of centenarians than the year before, as a result of 34 more women and 4 fewer men.
Tumours were the main cause of death in 2017
29.3% of the deaths that occurred in 2017, or 6,339 cases, were due to tumours. Following these were deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system, 26.5% (5,742 deaths) and, in third place, some way behind, were deaths caused by diseases of the respiratory system, which accounted for 10.8% (2,339).
The cause of death varied according to sex: amongst men, tumours caused 10.4 percentage points more deaths than those deriving from diseases of the circulatory system in 2017. The main cause of death amongst women was cardiovascular disease, followed in second place by tumours, although in this case the difference between them was just 4.9 percentage points.
Population growth was negative in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa and positive in Álava
With provisional data from 2017, population growth in the Basque Country was negative with deaths exceeding births by 4,574 individuals. By province, Bizkaia had a negative balance, with its population decreasing by 3,292; Gipuzkoa lost 1,429 people and Álava was the only province with a positive balance, its population increasing by 147 inhabitants.
