SERVICE SECTOR SHORT-TERM INDEX. I/2018
All sectors of market services registered increases in sales in the first quarter of 2018 in the Basque Country
The Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services were the subsectors with the most growth
The Trade sector, which comprises Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade and the Sale & Repair of Vehicles, saw sales increase by 2.6% in the first quarter of 2018 in constant terms, whereas the sectors that come under Other Services saw an increase in sales of 2.8%, all in relation to the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
Compared with the previous quarter, both the Trade and Other Services sectors saw rises of 0.9% and 1.2%, respectively, at constant prices and once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
Within Trade the year-on-year performance was positive for all sectors, above all in Sales and repair of motor vehicles, which was up by 6.7%. Sales also increased in Wholesale Trade, with a rise of 3.5%. Retail Trade also showed an improvement, although more moderate, with an increase of 0.8%.
In the Other Services sector, the sales index rose by 6.2% for the branch of Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services, 4.2% for Hotel Management & Catering, 2.5% for Scientific & Technical Professional Activities, 2.2% for Transport & Storage and, lastly, 1.2% for the branch of Information & Communications.
By province, in Álava sales in Trade were up by 5.4% and sales in Other Services were down by 0.2%; in Bizkaia sales in Trade rose by 0.9% and sales in Other Services by 3.9%; in Gipuzkoa sales in Trade increased by 3.9% and sales in Other Services by 1.9%. This is all compared to the first quarter of 2017 and once the price effect had been discounted.
The index of employed people in the Basque Country rose on a year-on-year basis for both indexes, with a 0.9% rise in the Trade sector and a 3.4% increase in the index for Other Services. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, the index was down by 0.1% in the Trade sector and up 1.0% in Other Services, all in deseasonalised terms.
