The number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country hardly changed in 2017
There were 1,579 marriages in the fourth quarter of 2017, 0.9% down on the previous year
In the provisional data for 2017, the number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country hardly changed (-0.1%) with regards to the previous year, according to Eustat data. The proportion of civil marriages exceeded the figure for 2016 by 2.3 percentage points, reaching 83.6% of the total, which included homosexual marriages.
For 2017 as a whole we still saw the same tendency to delay entering into marriage, with 90.4% of husbands and 81.2% of wives doing so at the age of 30 or over, higher percentages than those in 2016 (89.4% and 80.1%, respectively).
In the fourth quarter of 2017, 1,579 marriages were registered in the Basque Country, which was a drop of 0.9% compared to the same quarter in 2016. Of the total number of marriages, 54 were between people of the same sex – 23 between men and 31 between women – and the remaining 1,525 were heterosexual marriages.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, the percentage of civil weddings stood at 84.6%, up 4.2 points on the same quarter of 2016, and 10.1 points up on the quarter of summer 2017. There are usually a higher proportion of civil marriages during these months of the year than in the summer. This percentage refers only to heterosexual marriages, to which a further 3.4 points should be added for marriages between people of the same sex, all of which were civil.
1,483 men and 1,511 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage. For 1,235 spouses (83.3%) this was their first marriage, whilst 15 widowers and 233 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into marriage for the first time was slightly higher than that of men, with single women who married representing 83.5% of the total: 1,262, with 12 widows and 237 divorcees also remarrying.
The percentage of married men and women of foreign nationality continued to rise
In the 4th quarter of 2017, 12.3% of new husbands and 15.9% of new wives were foreign nationals. The percentage of foreign nationals entering into marriage was higher than in the same quarter of the previous year (10.4% men and 15.3% women, in the fourth quarter of 2016).
Taking the province into account, 224 couples fixed their residence in Álava, 526 in Gipuzkoa and 752 in Bizkaia. The number of couples who fixed their residence outside of the Basque Country stood at 77.
Regarding the distribution of married couples according to the age of the spouses, in the fourth quarter of 2017, 90.4% of recently married men were over 30 years of age, whereas amongst recently married women this percentage stood at 82.7%. In men this proportion was identical to that of the same quarter of the previous year: 90.4%, while it increased by 1.5 points among women (81.2%).
