The number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country rose by 1.3% in 2016

In contrast, there were 1,572 marriages registered in the fourth quarter of 2016, 8.4% down on the previous year

In the provisional data for 2016, the number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country rose by 1.3% with regards to the previous year, according to data prepared by Eustat. The proportion of civil marriages exceeded the figure for 2015 by 2.6 percentage points, reaching 81.3% of the total, which included homosexual marriages.

For 2016 as a whole we still see the same tendency to delay entering into marriage, with 89.4% of husbands and 80.2% of wives doing so at the age of 30 or over, higher percentages than those in 2015 (89.5% and 80%, respectively).

In the months of the fourth quarter of 2016, 1,572 marriages were registered in the Basque Country, which was a drop of 8.4% compared to the same quarter in 2015. Of the total number of marriages, 40 were between people of the same sex – 23 between men and 17 between women – and the remaining 1,532 were heterosexual marriages.

In the fourth quarter of 2016, the percentage of civil weddings stood at 80.5%, up 0.8 points on the same quarter of 2015, and 6.8% points up on the quarter of summer 2016. There are usually a higher proportion of civil marriages during these months of the year than in the summer. This percentage refers only to heterosexual marriages, to which a further 2.5 points should be added for marriages between people of the same sex, all of which were civil.

1,487 men and 1,463 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage. For 1,241 spouses (83.5%) this was their first marriage, whilst 13 widowers and 233 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into marriage for the first time was considerably higher than that of men, where they represented 85.2% of the total: 1,247, with 10 widows and 206 divorcees also remarrying.

The percentage of married men and women of foreign nationality rose

In the 4th quarter of 2016, 10.4% of new husbands and 15.4% of new wives were foreign nationals. The percentage of foreign nationals entering into marriage was higher than in the same quarter of the previous year (9.2% men and 13.8% women, in the fourth quarter of 2015).

Taking the province into account, 195 couples fixed their residence in Álava, 519 in Gipuzkoa and 764 in Bizkaia. The number of couples who fixed their residence outside of the Basque Country stood at 94.

Regarding the distribution of married couples according to the age of the spouses, in the fourth quarter of 2016, 90.5% of recently married men were over 30 years of age, whereas amongst recently married women this percentage stood at 81.4%. These figures are below those for the same period of the previous year: 91.1% for men and 83% for women.
