Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 1.1% in January 2017
Compared to the previous month, the industrial production index of the Basque Country fell by 1.5%
Industrial production of the Basque Country in January 2017 was up by 1.1% compared to the same month of 2016, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, December 2016, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 1.5%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
The trends of the index in January 2017 compared to January 2016 was positive for all the sectors, except for Capital Goods, which were down 2.5%. Intermediate Goods increased by 3.3%, Energy grew by 2.1% and Consumer Goods as a whole rose by 5.0%. Within these, Consumer Durables, which were up 14.3%, determined the rate of growth, since although Consumer Non-Durables rose, they did so far more moderately (1.2%).
The month-on-month variation for January 2017, compared to December 2016, registered both upward and downward trends for the main industrial sectors. Consumer Goods as a whole increased by 3.5%, since Consumer Durables and Consumer Non-Durables posted rises of 9.2% and 1.3%, respectively. On the other hand, Capital Goods fell by 1.7% and Intermediate Goods 0.5%. Energy experienced no change (0.0%).
Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw the most significant growth in the month of January 2017 with regards to year-on-year variations, were: Timber, Paper & Graphic Arts, which were up 5.6%; Electricity, Gas & Steam, which rose by 4.7%, and Metallurgy & Metal Products, which grew by 3.0%.
On the other hand, the largest decreases occurred in the Machinery & Equipment sector, which posted a year-on-year drop of 6.9%; in Electrical Material & Equipment, which registered a fall of 3.3%; and in Transport Material, which was down 2.4%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of January was positive only in Bizkaia, where it was up by 5.0%. In Gipuzkoa they fell by 1.6% and in Álava by 1.0%.
The month-on-month variation rate was negative in the three provinces: In Gipuzkoa it was down 3.6%, and in Álava and Bizkaia it was down 0.1% compared to December 2016.
