Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 6.4% in June 2016
The number of overnight stays registered an increase of 9.4% compared to the same month of the previous year
There were 257,880 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in June 2016, 15,500 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 6.4%, according to Eustat data. Visitor numbers increased: in Álava by 10.9%, in Bizkaia by 7.3% and in Gipuzkoa by 3.8%.
Overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in June 2016 reached 500,258, which was an increase of 9.4% on those registered in June of the previous year; that is, there were 42,782 more overnight stays. There was also a positive year-on-year variation in overnight stays in the three provinces: in Álava they increased by 15.9%, in Bizkaia they rose by 10.6% and in Gipuzkoa they were up by 6.1%.
The number of visitors from within Spain rose by 2.6% in the Basque Country compared to June of the previous year, whilst there was an increase in the proportion of foreign visitors of 11.3%. Álava registered a 2.8% increase in visitors from Spain, and a 29.3% increase in foreign visitors. In Bizkaia, the number of Spanish visitors was up by 7.6%, whereas the number of visitors from abroad rose by 7.0%. In Gipuzkoa there was a decrease in Spanish visitor numbers of 3.9%, and the number of foreign visitors rose by 11.7%.
The average length of stay in June was 1.94 days, longer than the average stay of 1.89 days registered in June 2015. In Álava there was an increase from 1.72 days last year to 1.80 days in June this year; in Bizkaia it rose from 1.84 days in June 2015 to 1.90 days this June; and for its part, in Gipuzkoa the average length of stay was also up from 2.00 days in June 2015 to 2.04 days this June.
There was an increase of 3.9 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 54.0% in June 2015 to 57.9% in June this year. Álava experienced a rise of 6.5 percentage points, increasing from 42.3% to 48.8%. Bizkaia saw an increase of 4.3 percentage points, going from a bed occupancy rate of 51.2% in June 2015 to a rate of 55.5% in June 2014. In Gipuzkoa the occupancy rate increased by 2.2 percentage points, going from 62.7% in June 2015 to 64.8% in June 2016.
The occupancy rate per room also registered an upward trend, with a 4.5 percentage point increase for the Basque Country overall, where the occupancy rate per room stood at 71.5%. In Álava it was up by 7.9 percentage points, standing at 60.2%; in Bizkaia it increased by 5.2 percentage points to reach 72.0%; whereas in Gipuzkoa it rose by 2.2 percentage points, standing at 75.5% occupancy per room.
The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in June this year was in Donostia-San Sebastián (74.4%), followed by the Gipuzkoa Coast (67.6%) and Bilbao (62.8%).
Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in June 2016, with 67.7% of occupied places, with the registered occupancy standing at 54.3% on weekdays.
The occupancy rate per room during the last four days of the Machine Tool Biennial stood at 84.8% in the hotel establishments of Bizkaia
Visitor numbers during the last few days of the Machine Tool Biennial, between 1 and 4 June (4 nights), rose to 17,013 in hotel establishments in Bizkaia. In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Bizkaia was 34,273, with an occupancy rate per room of 84.8%.
In Bilbao there were 10,415 visitors and 21,843 overnight stays, with a room occupancy rate of 92.0% over these days (between 1 and 4 June).
The occupancy rate per room during the Azkena Rock Festival stood at 82.6% in the hotel establishments of Álava
Visitor numbers during Azkena Rock, on 16 and 17 June, rose to 3,926 in hotel establishments in Álava. In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Álava was 7,136, with an occupancy rate per room of 82.6%.
In Vitoria-Gasteiz there were 2,706 visitors and 5,396 overnight stays, with a room occupancy rate of 90.8% over the two given days (16 and 17 June).
In rural accommodation, visitor numbers increased by 20.8% and overnight stays were up 13.9% in June 2016
There were 14,170 visitors to rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in June, 20.8% more than the same month of the previous year. By province, in Álava the number of visitors rose by 67.7%, in Bizkaia there was an increase of 20.9%, and in Gipuzkoa there was an increase of 5.3%. The number of visitors originating from abroad saw a rise of 69.4% with regards to those received a year ago and represented 23.3% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain rose by 11.2%.
Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 28,307 overnight stays in June, with an increase of 13.9% with respect to the same month of the previous year. At provincial level, they were up 50.4% in Álava, Bizkaia saw an increase of 10.8% and in Gipuzkoa they rose by 3.8%.
The bed occupancy rate stood at 23.1% with a rise of 2.5 percentage points from the figures obtained in June 2015. Álava recorded a rise of 7.5 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 24.2%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate was 22.1%, which meant an increase of 2.5 percentage points in relation to June 2015, and Gipuzkoa saw a rise of 0.3 percentage points to an occupancy rate this June of 23.2%.
Finally, the average length of stay per visitor decreased this June with respect to June 2015, going from 2.12 days a year ago to 2.00 this last month.
