Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 6.4% in May 2015

The occupancy rate per room during the Mayday public holiday was 86.3% in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country

There were 244,600 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in May 2015, 14,787 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 6.4%, according to Eustat data. The number of visitors rose by 7.5% in Gipuzkoa, 5.9% in Bizkaia, and 5.5% in Álava.

Furthermore, overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in May 2015 reached 455,792, which was an increase of 4.7% on those registered in May of the previous year; that is, there were 20,613 more overnight stays. There was also a positive variation in overnight stays in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they increased by 7.7%, in Álava they rose by 3.2% and in Bizkaia they were up by 2.8%.

The number of visitors from within Spain rose by 5.7% in the Basque Country compared to May of the previous year, whilst there was an increase in the proportion of foreign visitors of 7.5%. Álava registered a 2.7% increase in visitors from Spain, and a 13.3% increase in foreign visitors. In Bizkaia the number of Spanish visitors was up by 8.6%, whereas the number of visitors from abroad rose by 2.0%. In Gipuzkoa there was an increase in Spanish visitor numbers of 3.2%, and the number of foreign visitors rose by 12.3%.

The average length of stay in May was 1.86 days, down on the 1.89 days average stay registered in May 2014. In Álava there was a decrease from 1.77 days last year to 1.73 days in May this year; in Bizkaia it fell from 1.91 days in May 2014 to 1.86 days this May; and for its part, the average length of stay in Gipuzkoa was virtually the same in May 2014 and May 2015, 1.92 in both cases.

There was an increase of 2.4 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 50.0% in May 2014 to 52.4% in May this year. Álava experienced a rise of 1.5 percentage points, increasing from 41.1% to 42.5%. Bizkaia saw an increase of 0.8 percentage points, going from a bed occupancy rate of 51.6% in May 2014 to a rate of 52.4% in May 2015. In Gipuzkoa the occupancy rate increased by 4.8 percentage points, going from 51.9% in May 2014 to 56.7% in May 2015.

The occupancy rate per room was also positive, up by 3.3 percentage points for the Basque Country overall, where the occupancy rate per room stood at 65.3%. In Álava it was up by 3.6 percentage points, standing at 53.5%; in Bizkaia it increased by 2.1 percentage points, standing at 68.5%; whereas in Gipuzkoa it rose by 4.6 percentage points, standing at 66.2% occupancy per room.

The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in May this year was in Donostia/San Sebastián (65.8%), followed by Bilbao (60.0%) and Gipuzkoa Costa (55.5%).

Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in May 2015, with 66.8% of places occupied, whilst the registered occupancy stood at 45.5% on weekdays.

The number of visitors during the Mayday public holiday increased to 23,981 in the hotel establishments in the Basque Country. These were visits that occurred on Friday and Saturday (2 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in the Basque Country was 46,061, with an occupancy rate per room of 86.3%. The occupancy rate per room was 78.5% in Álava, 87.6% in Bizkaia and 87.9% in Gipuzkoa.

Visitor numbers during the Ferroforma Fair, from 26 to 28 May (3 nights), rose to 11,107 in hotel establishments in Bizkaia. In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Bizkaia was 22,971, with an occupancy rate per room of 87.0%.

The occupancy rate per room during festival El Sol stood at 76.4% in the hotel establishments of Bizkaia

Visitor numbers during the advertising festival "El Sol" increased to 12,350 in the hotel establishments of Bizkaia. These were visits that lasted from 28 to 30 May (3 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Bizkaia was 23,530, with an occupancy rate per room of 76.4%.

In rural accommodation, visitor numbers increased by 17.0% and overnight stays rose by 5.8% in May 2015

There were 12,063 visitors to rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in May, 17.0% more than the same month of the previous year. By province, in Álava the number of visitors was down by 3.5%, in Bizkaia there was an increase of 22.3%, and in Gipuzkoa there was an increase of 21.9%. The number of visitors originating from abroad more than doubled with regards to those received a year ago and represented 12.3% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain rose by 5.2%.

Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 24,718 overnight stays in May, with an increase of 5.8% with respect to the same month of the previous year. At provincial level, they were up 6.5% in Álava, Bizkaia saw an increase of 9.5% and in Gipuzkoa they rose by 3.6%.

The bed occupancy rate stood at 20.3% with a rise of 1.1 percentage points from the figures obtained in May 2014. Álava recorded a rise of 1.4 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 16.0%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate was 19.6%, which meant an increase of 1.1 percentage points in relation to May 2014, and Gipuzkoa saw a rise of 1.0 percentage points to reach an occupancy rate this May of 22.6%.

Finally, the average length of stay per visitor decreased this May with respect to May 2014, going from 2.27 days a year ago to 2.05 this last month.
